Dynamic events of the Formula Student: engineering to the track
In the dynamic events, the performance of the cars in different situations and conditions is tested
After the static events and having passed an exhaustive technical inspection of the car, the teams participating in a competition of the Formula Student are enabled to perform in the dynamic events, where the best prototype will be determined through tests that put to the limit each one of the cars in different situations and measure their main characteristics, such as longitudinal and lateral accelerations, endurance or efficiency.
The dynamic events represent 675 points of a total of 1000 for each competition. They are divided into four events: the Acceleration, the Skid Pad, the Autocross and the Endurance & Efficiency.
The Acceleration consists of completing a straight section of 75 m as fast as possible. This dynamic event measures the longitudinal acceleration of the car and has a maximum score of 75 points. UPC ecoRacing currently holds the record in this test for a vehicle with rear-wheel drive, which represents a mark of 0 to 100 km / h of 2.6 seconds.
The lateral acceleration of the vehicles, that is, their ability for turning, is proved in the Skid Pad (75 points). The teams must complete an eight-like circuit, with certain dimensions and a constant radius of curvature.
After these first events, Autocross or Fastest lap is reached, in which the cars must complete a circuit specially designed for the Formula Student. These tracks are usually characterized by being very twisty, with few long straights, favoring the cars with better acceleration, braking and cornering. The fastest team gets 100 points.
Using the same circuit, the teams must complete a total of 22 km and depending on the speed and used energy, the points corresponding to the Endurance & Efficiency are assigned. These two combined events involve more than 40% of the points of the competition, with a total of 425. UPC ecoRacing won the Efficiency in the Formula Student in the United Kingdom and the Formula Student Germany 2016, in addition to the combined victory in Formula Australasia in 2017.In summary, the dynamic events are responsible for showing the capabilities of each of the prototypes designed and manufactured by the different competing universities directly on the track. It is for this reason that they are also the preferred tests of UPC ecoRacing!
